Schuyler David Kenney
Schuyler was born in the Township of Kasota, County of Le Sueur.[Birth Certificate] A copy of a letter from his Loving Aunt Eva [sisterof his mother Mary Janette] written to him on November 5th welcoming hisbirth and telling him of two aunts and one uncle living in Le Sueur. Shementioned that his " grandfather's eyes were quite poorly ant that he wasat Waterville yesterday". [David H. Semans was Mary Janette's father.]
"Schuyler Kenney was a barber in St. Paul in his early years before hebecame affiliated with the Blind as Secretary and Treasurer for theMinnesota Organization for the Blind for many years. Schuyler was aMethodist and Rose was a Catholic. In 1914 Schuyler began having troublewith his eyes and was no longer able to work as a barber. Rose worked atDayton's Department Store in the dressmaking department then. Schuylertook little Marie at age 9 months to live with his parents in Waterville,Minnesota. In 1918, Schuyler regained much of his eyesight and was ableto work again, so Marie went back to live with her parents. Rose gavebirth to a son, but died giving birth, and the baby lived only fourdays. Marie went back to her grandparents. A couple years laterSchuyler married Marian." - Mary McRoberts - "William Semens" page151-152
Schuyler grew up in Waterville, Minnesota and I assume attended schoolthere. He also attended Carlton College at one time. There is
a picture of him in his father's barber shop.
He married Marian Lucille Throckmorton in 1921 [who was born blind]and they had three children.
Apparently Schuyler had a problem with his eyes for some time. I wastold that he loved to read and was instructed not to read so much. Hiseyesight left him suddenly in 1936. He may have attended a school forthe blind because he was able to read braille and was able to travelaround the city by himself. He knew the streets of Minneapolis and St.Paul very well and could always direct us when we visited them inMinneapolis. He loved to play penny ante poker [the cards were marked inbraille] and checkers. He played checkers on a special board withspecial checkers and could surprise his opponents with scientific gameplans. He was particularly adept in the math department doing problemsin his head faster than one could work on paper. He loved a gooddiscussion [argument] and usually won his point. The "Talking Books"arrived weekly and Schuyler spent many hours 'reading' these books.
During the depression of 1929-1931, he was trained to become a pianotuner which he did for many years. Sometime in 1940 he began to work asa Field Representative for the United Blind of Minnesota, Inc. and workedfor this organization until his death. He and Marian were very active inthe organization and enjoyed many friendships there. They traveled tomany of the conventions nationally. Barbara often traveled with them andwas their guide. He enjoyed traveling and socializing.
