Mikkel emigrated to Emmerson, Manitoba, Canada -America with hisolder sister Nicoline and brother Daniel Bertheus in 1887. He was22 years old. His application for Citizenship of the United States showsMikkel arrived at the Port of St. Vincent in the month ofJune, 1887. He signed the application as Mikkel P. Olson November 1,1888. On July 26, 1894 he had changed his name to Michael O.Dragland.

He first owned property in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1914 hebought property in Roseau, Minnesota and the family moved there.Mary Gulliksen died there in 1924. He married Lena Bergan in 1933 andthe sold the farm in Roseau in 1934 and
moved to Bow Island, Alberta, Canada. Later they moved to MedicineHat, Canada where Michael died of stomach cancer in 1940.
